Together for circular
interiors of tomorrow

Zwartwoud is the partner for interior designers looking for circular interior solutions. In our opinion, the key to a successful circular project lies in early cooperation. With 100 years of craftsmanship and innovation, we know how to turn sustainable designs into circular interiors.

“Interior building isn't all you do. You're actually doing the part before, and the part after, too. You have a unique position in that and I think we found each other there too.”

Yannic Alidarso • Interior and product designer Creneau International

Circular thinking and acting

Zwartwoud is working on a future where interiors are as beautiful as they are sustainable. With a circular mindset and a systematic process, we bring interior designs to life. From product development and project management to realization and installation.

Zwartwoud has sustainably organized wood production in-house, but operates independently of materials. We have a large network of specialized partners. This is how we meet the needs and wishes of our clients: Zwartwoud offers customized solutions. In the field of circularity, where the possibilities are endless, our network with innovative partners offers many opportunities.

We make Bills of Materials (BOM) and are able to generate a CO2 footprint thanks to our cooperation partners. With a material passport, we make it clear for each piece of furniture how much and which circular material has been used and how materials are connected. This also makes it clear to future users exactly what kind of material they have in their hands and how the material can be harvested.

At Zwartwoud, circularity is not about trends, but about conscious craftsmanship and long-term impact. This is how we build interiors together that not only make the space, but also the world a little more beautiful.

Gerechtsgebouw

Forumbibliotheek

Haren Forum Library has been renewed while maintaining the existing collection and maximizing the reuse of interior components. With, among other things, flexible reading tables, spaces for the Taalhuis and Digihuis and an inviting youth corner with a sitting area, the library meets the need to meet, learn and stay in a circular environment.

Rewire

Winner Archello Award 2025 in the “Office Interior of the Year - Large” category, designed by UP architecture.

Royal FloraHolland

A place where employees, growers and buyers meet and work together: the Royal FloraHolland office in Aalsmeer has been transformed into a sustainable and circular office. It bears the name Floradôme.

ING

Characteristic of the ING house concept is the homely atmosphere in which hospitality is central. Based on the Creneau International concept and in collaboration with Inbo Architects and Klokgroep, Zwartwoud is co-creator of the rollout of the concept design.

Stadhuis Groningen

The main contractor of the major project, Rottinghuis, gave Zwartwoud control over the realization of, among other things, the paneling of the wall and ceiling elements in the council chamber. In addition, we provided the furniture in the council room, the vestibule desk downstairs and various (seating) furniture.

Our optimal process

No two design-to-realization processes are ever the same, especially when it comes to circular projects. While Zwartwoud is flexible, we do have an ideal approach. In our view, the optimal design and manufacturing process is the circular construction team model. The key to a successful circular project is early collaboration between all supply chain partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

How does the collaboration with Zwartwoud work for interior architects?

Ideally, we join the 'circular' team: architect, client, contractor, and interior builder work together on one project, rather than you as the architect delivering the design and the execution being tendered separately. In practice, this means we brainstorm on concepts, materials, and circular alternatives, and translate that into a Bill of Materials and a concrete budget and timeline. Where necessary, we create prototypes or mock-ups so that you and your client have a clear picture of the end result early on. You will have one fixed point of contact at Zwartwoud throughout the entire process, who thinks along with you from the first sketch to installation. This way, you aren't working with an executor who only appears once the design is set, but with a partner who considers what is feasible, affordable, and circular from the very beginning.

02

When is the best time to bring Zwartwoud into a project?

The sooner, the better. We prefer to get involved as soon as the concept takes shape, during the initial design or the Program of Requirements phase. At that stage, we can truly contribute to material-independent solutions, circular alternatives, and feasibility within budget before choices are finalized. This is also the moment we prefer to join the construction team, alongside the client, contractor, and interior builder, ensuring that a beautifully designed concept doesn't run into production or planning issues later on. Joining later in the process? We are happy to help then too, although the room to maneuver regarding material choices and approach is often more limited. We achieve the greatest gains, both in terms of sustainability and costs, simply by being part of the construction team from the concept phase.

03

Is circular construction more expensive than traditional construction?

Not necessarily. Circular materials and reuse can be more expensive in some areas, but they often yield savings at the project level—for example, by reusing existing furniture or materials from the client instead of replacing them. For the Aegon project in The Hague, for instance, 100% of the partition wall profiles were reused, and 3.7 kilometers of furniture panels were reupholstered. What exactly determines the business case is project-specific: scale, material choices, and the degree of reuse all play a role. We think along with you from the start so that circularity and budget don't have to be at odds.

04

How much time should I allow from design to completion?

That varies significantly per project. The lead time depends on the scale, the number of supply chain partners, and the extent to which circular materials need to be processed or sourced. What we can say is: the sooner we work together as a team, the more predictable the planning becomes. Our project teams monitor the schedule and budget throughout the entire process and identify bottlenecks early on, so you as an architect won't face any surprises. Discuss your project with us, and we will provide a realistic, tailored estimate.

05

Do I need prior experience with circular design to work with you?

No. We work with two types of architects: those who have already fully embraced circular principles, and those who are encountering them through their clients but haven't worked with them before. Both are welcome. What we ask for is curiosity and an openness to exploring new ways of working. We provide the circular expertise and technical documentation (material passports, CO2 footprints, Bills of Materials). This way, you don't have to be an expert yourself to create a strong circular design together.

06

Can you handle large, nationwide projects?

Yes. We have experience with large-scale interior projects for enterprise clients such as ABN Amro, Aegon, and the Dutch Gasunie. Thanks to our material-independent network of specialized partners and our own production facilities, we can scale up without compromising on a project's circular approach or bespoke character. Our project teams take full control of the process: from planning and logistics to execution, ensuring that even complex, multi-layered projects remain manageable.
